Vunilagi Airport Plans Spark Hopes for Tourism Boom

Vunilagi has emerged as a potential entry point in Vanua Levu, according to aviation experts. Following the offer of land by the paramount chief of Cakaudrove and Parliament Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for a new airport construction at Vunilagi, business leaders are optimistic about the project’s realization.

Avikash Pillay, president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce, is among those hoping for this development. He noted that Vunilagi is located approximately a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town and features flat, spacious land. Pillay pointed out the limitations of the current Savusavu Airport, where larger aircraft cannot land due to space constraints, posing challenges for the tourism sector. A larger airport is expected to boost tourism, ensuring a thriving economy in the Northern Division.

Government ministers are reportedly exploring the feasibility of establishing an airport at Vunilagi.

In addition, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka mentioned that Nasarawaqa in Bua was also being considered as a potential site for an international airport. He indicated that, since the inception of the NaVualiku tourism development project, the World Bank had identified additional possible locations. Gavoka acknowledged the public’s demand for an international airport and stated that an official announcement would be forthcoming by the end of the year.
