Vunilagi has been recognized as a potential entry point for air travel in Vanua Levu, according to sources within the aviation industry.

The paramount chief of Cakaudrove and the Speaker of Parliament, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, has offered land for the potential construction of a new airport at Vunilagi, prompting hope among local business leaders.

Savusavu Chamber of Commerce president Avikash Pillay is optimistic about the project. “Vunilagi is approximately a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town and features flat, spacious land,” he explained. He also noted the limitations of the current Savusavu Airport, stating that its runway is insufficient for larger aircraft, which poses a significant challenge for the tourism sector.

As the leading tourist destination in the Northern Division, a new airport could elevate tourist numbers in the region. Pillay added that government officials are considering the possibility of developing an airport at Vunilagi.

On another note, last year, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka mentioned Nasarawaqa in Bua as another potential site for an international airport. However, since the initiation of the NaVualiku tourism development project, the World Bank has pinpointed additional options.

“As a government, we understand the community’s desire for an international airport, and we are actively exploring this possibility,” stated Mr. Gavoka, who promised an announcement by the end of the year.
