Vunilagi Airport: A New Gateway for Tourism?

Vunilagi has been proposed as a potential port of entry in Vanua Levu, according to sources in the aviation sector. The initiative gained traction after Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the paramount chief of Cakaudrove and Speaker of Parliament, offered land for a new airport at Vunilagi. This development has sparked optimism among local business leaders.

Avikash Pillay, the president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce, expressed hope for the project’s realization. “Vunilagi is about a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town and offers a flat, spacious area,” he noted. “Our current Savusavu Airport runway cannot accommodate larger aircraft due to space limitations, which poses a challenge for the tourism sector.”

As the largest tourist destination in the Northern Division, a new, larger airport could significantly enhance tourist arrivals. Pillay mentioned that government officials are also exploring options for airport development at Vunilagi.

In addition, last year, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka pointed to Nasarawaqa in Bua as another potential site for an international airport. He added that following the NaVualiku tourism development project, the World Bank has suggested alternative locations as well.

“As a government, we acknowledge the community’s desire for an international airport and we are actively considering it,” Gavoka said, confirming that an announcement regarding the project is expected by the end of the year.
