Vunilagi Airport: A Game-Changer for Tourism?

Vunilagi has been recognized as a potential location for a new airport in Vanua Levu, according to sources in the aviation sector. Following an offer of land by Cakaudrove’s paramount chief and Parliament Speaker Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu for the airport’s construction, many business leaders are optimistic about the project’s prospects.

Savusavu Chamber of Commerce president Avikash Pillay is among those supporting the initiative. He noted that Vunilagi is approximately a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town and features spacious, flat land. Pillay pointed out that the current Savusavu Airport is inadequate for larger aircraft, which poses ongoing challenges for the tourism sector.

As the largest tourist hub in the Northern Division, a new, larger airport could attract more visitors to the region. He mentioned that government officials are exploring the feasibility of developing the airport in Vunilagi.

Additionally, there was mention of an alternative site in Bua. Last year, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka suggested Nasarawaqa, Bua, as another potential location for an international airport. However, with the launch of the NaVualiku tourism development project, the World Bank has identified other prospective sites. Mr. Gavoka confirmed that the government is aware of public demand for an international airport and is actively considering the options, with an announcement expected by the end of the year.
