Vunilagi Airport: A Game Changer for Fiji’s Tourism?

Vunilagi has emerged as a potential new entry point for aviation in Vanua Levu, according to sources within the aviation industry. Following the proposal from Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the paramount chief of Cakaudrove and Speaker of Parliament, to provide land for the development of a new airport in Vunilagi, many business leaders are optimistic about the project’s prospects.

Avikash Pillay, president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce, is among those advocating for the initiative. He noted that Vunilagi is conveniently located about 30 minutes from Savusavu Town and features flat, expansive land suitable for airport construction. Pillay pointed out the limitations of the existing Savusavu Airport, stating that its small runway makes it challenging for larger aircraft to land, which poses ongoing difficulties for the tourism sector. A larger airport, he argued, could significantly boost tourist arrivals, given that Savusavu is the leading tourist destination in the Northern Division.

Government officials are reportedly exploring the potential for an airport at Vunilagi. Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka mentioned that Nasarawaqa in Bua is also being considered as a secondary location for an international airport. Gavoka indicated that the World Bank has identified additional potential sites since the initiation of the NaVualiku tourism development project. He acknowledged the community’s desire for an international airport, assuring that the government is actively pursuing these developments, with an announcement expected by the end of the year.
