Vunilagi has emerged as a potential location for a new airport in Vanua Levu, according to sources within the aviation sector. The initiative gained momentum following an offer of land by Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, the paramount chief of Cakaudrove and the Speaker of Parliament, which has sparked interest among local business leaders.
Avikash Pillay, president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce, expressed optimism for the project, highlighting Vunilagi’s advantageous location. “Vunilagi is approximately a 30-minute drive from Savusavu Town and has ample flat land available,” he stated. Pillay pointed out the limitations of the existing Savusavu Airport, which struggles to accommodate larger aircraft due to its size, impacting tourism growth.
As the premier tourist destination in the Northern Division, the establishment of a larger airport could significantly enhance tourist arrivals. Pillay noted that government officials are also considering the feasibility of the Vunilagi airport project.
In addition, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka previously mentioned Nasarawaqa in Bua as another potential site for an international airport. He indicated that the World Bank has identified further locations since the NaVualiku tourism development initiative began. “We acknowledge the community’s desire for an international airport and are actively pursuing options,” Mr. Gavoka stated, assuring that an announcement regarding the project would be made by the end of the year.
