Senivalati Vunibola, a former representative for Fiji’s rugby sevens team, has expressed strong confidence in Osea Kolinisau, who has taken on the role of head coach for the Fiji Airways men’s 7s team. During a one-day invitational sevens tournament named in his honor, held in Nakorosule, Naitasiri, Vunibola emphasized that only a seasoned player turned coach, like Kolinisau, possesses the necessary skills to effectively lead the national team.

Vunibola highlighted the critical understanding that ex-players have regarding key game mechanics, such as defense and attack, which are essential for successful coaching. He praised Kolinisau’s leadership style, particularly his emphasis on fostering a supportive atmosphere among players, distinguishing him from other coaches who may discourage their teams.

Since Kolinisau’s appointment last year, the Fiji 7s team has made significant strides in the 2024/2025 HSBC SVNS World Series. They have achieved noteworthy finishes, including winning the Dubai tournament and securing a third-place finish in Cape Town. Vunibola expressed optimism for the team’s future under Kolinisau’s guidance, especially as they prepare for the upcoming McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s and the Perth Sevens scheduled for January 24-26.

As the Fiji team leads the World SVNS Series, their dedication and unity reflect a hopeful environment, inspiring young athletes aspiring to follow in their footsteps. The commitment to teamwork and improvement not only positions Fiji for success in future tournaments but also serves as an encouraging example for aspiring rugby players.
