The District of Vuda is intensifying its efforts to combat drug-related issues by enhancing monitoring along its coastal areas. This initiative follows a recent drug bust at Vatia Wharf, which raised significant concerns about the safety of the community. Ba Provincial Council Chair Ratu Meli Tora shared with FBC News that it is crucial to implement these measures to protect the local population from illegal substances.
In light of potential lapses in surveillance by the Fiji Police Force or the Republic of Fiji Navy, Vuda is prepared to deploy its own resources for surveillance, including one of its patrol boats. Ratu Meli emphasized the importance of traditional leaders taking proactive steps to deter illegal activities in the region.
He stated, “We are discussing using one of our boats. If there is no surveillance from the Navy, we will monitor our coastal areas ourselves.” In addition to increased surveillance, the Vanua o Vuda has introduced a nine-month ban on kava, alcohol, cigarettes, and all forms of substance abuse, sending a strong message that illegal activities will not be tolerated in the area.
These decisive actions reflect the community’s commitment to fostering a safer environment and safeguarding the well-being of its residents. The proactive approach, combining local resources with a strict prohibition on harmful substances, demonstrates a united front against drug-related challenges in Vuda.
