Volunteers Set to Transform Healthcare in Fiji

A memorandum of understanding has been established between the Ministry of Health and Medical Services and Youth with a Mission (YWAM) New Zealand, facilitating the arrival of volunteer medical professionals from New Zealand to provide healthcare services in Fiji’s maritime and rural regions.

Minister for Health Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu announced in Parliament that the 10-year agreement was approved by the Cabinet on August 4 and August 7.

“This partnership allows YWAM and the Ministry of Health to work together to enhance service delivery and aim for universal health coverage for our hard-to-reach populations in Fiji, primarily in rural and maritime areas,” Dr. Lalabalavu stated. “They will arrive on their ship to assist in these areas.”

The team will provide essential primary healthcare services, which include awareness campaigns, screenings, and dental care.

Looking ahead, Dr. Lalabalavu mentioned the necessity to streamline processes related to registration, procurement, and customs for these volunteer teams.

“We appreciate this ongoing partnership, which has persisted since the previous government. The Ministry is committed to continuing this collaboration, as they play a vital role in enhancing primary healthcare, particularly in island areas,” he added.

When questioned about the possibility of waiving the temporary registration fees required by the Fiji Medical and Dental Council for the doctors, nurses, and dentists providing free services, Dr. Lalabalavu indicated that this would be considered.

“Most of the visiting teams consist of the same members returning each year. We will certainly take this into account and explore how we can better assist them, as they assist us.”
