The Nasinu Volleyball Alliance organized a volleyball tournament at the Valelevu Volleyball Court yesterday, marking a significant return of the sport to the area after more than a decade. Despite the rain-soaked court, the enthusiasm of players and community members remained undeterred as they gathered to support the event.
President Matai Daulako, leading the Nasinu Volleyball Alliance, emphasized the importance of revitalizing volleyball in the community. “We have reintroduced volleyball in Nasinu after a lapse of 10 years,” Daulako remarked, highlighting the sport’s capacity to bring together people of all ages.
Nasinu, known as Fiji’s most populous region, grapples with various social issues, including rising unemployment and drug-related problems. The Alliance aims to tackle these challenges by fostering community engagement through volleyball, which they view as a vital tool for unity and purpose among local youth. “We see volleyball as one of the vehicles that can combat all these issues surrounding the community,” Daulako stated.
The past three months have seen the Alliance host several tournaments, including one of Fiji’s largest competitions featuring a $10,000 prize pool, which has injected excitement and pride into the local area.
Daulako also acknowledged the importance of collaborative efforts, expressing gratitude towards the Nasinu Town Council, Fiji Sports Commission, and other supporters. “Together, we’re using volleyball to inspire discipline and pride in our youth,” he stated. To promote a safe environment during events, the Alliance has introduced on-site drug testing.
“Our youth are the leaders of tomorrow,” Daulako affirmed. “If we can give them a reason to come together, to play, to compete, and to feel part of something bigger, then we’ve already made a difference.”
With the support of faith-based groups and civic organizations, volleyball is emerging in Nasinu not just as a sport but as a movement toward change, dignity, and unity within the community.
