Volavola Signs with Reds for 2026 Season

Fijian international Ben Volavola is making a highly anticipated return to Super Rugby, having signed a one-year contract with the Queensland Reds for the 2026 season. The Queensland Rugby Union has officially confirmed this move, highlighting Volavola’s versatility and experience, noting that he can play as a flyhalf, inside centre, or fullback—a significant asset to their backline.

At 34 years old, Volavola boasts an impressive career with over 200 professional matches and 38 test caps for Fiji. He has participated in two Rugby World Cups, in 2015 and 2019, underscoring his experience at the highest levels of the sport.

In expressing his enthusiasm about joining the Reds, Volavola stated, “The biggest reason I found the Reds so appealing is believing that they have a squad that can challenge for some silverware.” He also mentioned the personal motivation of returning to Australia to be close to family, particularly with a two-year-old son in tow.

Before this signing, Volavola spent time in England playing for the Leicester Tigers, where he reunited with former Waratahs coach Michael Cheika. This phase of his career reignited his passion for rugby, as he played various positions, which he believes has enriched his understanding of the game. “Playing under ‘Cheik’ at Leicester reinvigorated my game. It was a blessing,” Volavola said.

Born in Sydney before being raised in Fiji, Volavola began his professional journey with the NSW Waratahs in 2013 and has played for top clubs in New Zealand, France, and England. Looking ahead, he remains available for Fiji’s national team while also reactivating his eligibility to play for Australia in 2026, thus keeping the door open for potential international representation.

His ambition stretches to the future, aiming to play for Fiji in the 2027 Rugby World Cup hosted in Australia. “To play international rugby again and get myself to a Rugby World Cup in Australia in 2027 is definitely an ambition,” he shared.

The appointment has received a warm welcome from Reds Head Coach Les Kiss, who noted that Volavola’s extensive experience and adaptability would be a significant boost for the squad: “The ability to play multiple positions is a really strong attribute within our Reds squad,” Kiss remarked, highlighting Volavola’s role as a mentor for the younger members of the team.

As the Reds gear up for their pre-season training in early 2026, they are set on strengthening their title push in the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific campaign, and Volavola’s addition is expected to enhance their capabilities. This exciting transition promises to energize both Volavola and the Reds, offering a positive outlook for the season ahead.
