Vodafone Sugar Festival Contestant Urges Parents to Watch Their Kids

Families are encouraged to prioritize spending quality time with loved ones, a sentiment expressed by Michelle Lambert, a contestant in this year’s Vodafone Sugar Festival. Ms. Lambert, who is 20 years old and hails from Navaka in Noco with roots in Kulukulu Village, emphasizes the need for parental awareness regarding their children’s activities. “I believe that many parents are not fully aware of what their children are engaging in nowadays,” she noted. “Some don’t even realize their children smoke, which is why I chose to advocate for this important topic.”

As one of five contestants competing for the festival queen’s title, Ms. Lambert speaks of her excitement in participating in this annual celebration. She invested a week preparing her traditional Fijian attire, although she chose not to disclose specific details about her outfit.

The Vodafone Sugar Festival serves not only as a festivity but also as a platform for empowering young women. “It showcases talents and highlights the capabilities and confidence of younger women,” Ms. Lambert said, reinforcing her belief in the strength of women today.

The festival has grown increasingly recognized as an avenue for contestants to raise awareness on various societal issues, building on the tradition established by previous participants. For instance, past contestants like Vani Dianilawe Tobakarakarawa, crowned queen in a recent festival, utilized her platform to advocate against illicit drug use and promote community involvement. This trend represents a broader movement among young women in their efforts to address critical social challenges while celebrating their cultural heritage.

As the festival unfolds, it continues to unite families and communities through shared experiences and impactful discussions, fostering a spirit of togetherness and growth. Through their advocacy and participation, individuals like Ms. Lambert aim to inspire positive changes within their communities, making the festival an even more meaningful event.
