The CEO of Vodafone Fiji, Elenoa Biukoto, has announced that funds stored on lost E-ticketing cards will not be transferred to the new card system. During an interview with FijiVillage on Facebook, she explained that the absence of appropriate facilities to facilitate such transfers prevents them from moving forward with this process. She highlighted that previous issues with the old system led to a substantial amount of abuse, prompting efforts to tighten security and accountability for cardholders.
Biukoto emphasized the importance of safeguarding the value stored on each card, saying, “Your card is basically money which means you must keep it safe.” Currently, only subsidized student cards, referred to as “blue cards,” are eligible for transfer to the new system.
Consumer Council of Fiji’s CEO, Seema Shandil, expressed that a case-by-case approach could be beneficial, allowing Vodafone to assess genuine cases where customers may have lost their hard-earned funds due to losses. The Deputy Prime Minister, Manoa Kamikamica, confirmed ongoing discussions with Vodafone to enhance services and better address customer concerns.
These comments come amid public frustration over the transition to the new e-ticketing system, with many commuters reporting difficulties and concerns regarding the process. Nonetheless, the proactive measures announced by Vodafone, combined with government support, demonstrate a commitment to making improvements.
Additionally, similar discussions have led to plans for increasing resources at customer service locations and implementing priority lines for vulnerable groups, which may ultimately enhance the overall experience for all commuters. Such collaborative efforts reflect a hopeful outlook for the public transport system in Fiji, emphasizing a commitment to improving accessibility and reliability for users in the future.
