Visa has inaugurated its Pacific Islands Regional Office in Suva, marking a significant step toward strengthening Fiji’s regional economic connections and enhancing digital payment solutions for businesses and consumers alike. This initiative reflects the country’s commitment to fostering a more integrated financial ecosystem in the Pacific region.
Anthony Watson, Visa’s Country Manager for New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, emphasized the transformative potential of the Pacific Islands, stating, “The Pacific Islands are at the forefront of an exciting transformation, with innovation and growth rapidly shaping the digital payments landscape.” He expressed pride in collaborating with local businesses to create opportunities that promote sustainable economic growth across the area.
The new office is poised to serve as a center for digital financial innovation, not only for Fiji but for the greater Pacific region, as internet connectivity and smartphone usage continue to reshape local financial services. The hub aims to strengthen cross-border payment systems, enhancing Fiji’s ties to the global market and creating substantial opportunities for growth.
Visa has engaged with multiple partners within the Pacific Islands, including the organization Good Return, to encourage the adoption of secure, convenient, and reliable payment methods through comprehensive financial education programs. Their collaboration has yielded impressive results, with financial capability scores improving from 6.1 to 7.6 out of 10, and trust in mobile payments soaring from 62% to 96% following training sessions.
Viliame Gavoka, Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, welcomed Visa’s new office and its dedication to bolstering the payment landscape, empowering local industries, and enhancing experiences for both visitors and residents. He expressed anticipation for how this regional hub could accelerate momentum across Fiji, unlocking further opportunities for innovation and economic growth.
As a predominant global digital payments network, Visa connects consumers, businesses, banks, and governments, facilitating secure transactions and propelling the push toward a cashless future. Established in 1958 and headquartered in the United States, Visa continues to prioritize financial inclusion, with heightened focus on fostering digital payments in the Pacific Islands.
By enabling transactions through cards, smartphones, or computers, Visa is playing a pivotal role in guiding the region toward a future where cashless payments are commonplace, supported by its extensive history of collaboration and innovation within the financial sector. This move not only enhances economic prospects for local communities but also positions Fiji as a progressive leader in digital finance within the Pacific region.
