The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has raised significant concerns following a viral social media video that depicted children splashing water and throwing it at vehicles traveling on public roads. LTA Chief Executive Officer Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted this incident as a serious road safety issue with potentially grave consequences.

Rokosawa pointed out that while some may view throwing water at vehicles as harmless fun, it poses a considerable danger. Such actions can distract drivers, hinder visibility, and provoke sudden responses like swerving or abrupt braking, which are especially critical for those navigating larger vehicles such as buses. The CEO noted that drivers of these vehicles require complete focus while transporting passengers, as even a momentary distraction could lead to disastrous road incidents involving multiple parties.

Moreover, the children who engage in this activity are jeopardizing their own safety. Being close to moving traffic increases their risk of being hit by vehicles or causing accidents, which could lead to serious injuries or fatalities.

Rokosawa urged parents, guardians, and community members to take an active role in supervising children and educating them about road safety, emphasizing the importance of vigilance during school breaks when children are more frequently outdoors. He also advised motorists to remain calm and alert if confronted with such potentially dangerous scenarios, cautioning against reactions that could heighten the risks involved.

This situation serves as a vivid reminder of the critical importance of road safety and the need for collective efforts in preventing hazardous behaviors, especially from young and impressionable children. By promoting awareness and understanding of these dangers, communities can work together to create a safer environment for everyone.
