The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has issued a strong warning to the public regarding the dangerous practice of splashing or throwing water at passing vehicles. This advisory comes in response to a viral social media video that depicted children engaging in this hazardous activity on public roads.
LTA’s Chief Executive Officer, Irimaia Rokosawa, expressed significant concern over the incident, highlighting its serious safety implications for both drivers and the children participating in the act. Rokosawa emphasized that operating large vehicles, such as buses, requires undivided attention, particularly when they are carrying passengers. A momentary distraction, such as being startled or blinded by water, could potentially lead to loss of control and cause serious harm to innocent road users.
“What may appear to some as harmless fun can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation,” Rokosawa stated. The dangers are not limited to motorists but extend to the children who are at risk while engaging in unsafe behavior near traffic.
The LTA CEO clarified that such actions, which disrupt the safe operation of vehicles, could violate existing laws, prompting potential legal repercussions. Rokosawa appealed to parents, guardians, and community members to take an active role in educating children about road safety, especially during school holidays when children are more likely to be outdoors.
In addition to urging responsible behavior among children, Rokosawa reminded drivers to remain calm and vigilant when faced with similar situations and to avoid reactions that could exacerbate the danger. This call for caution aims to foster a safer environment for all road users and protect the well-being of the younger generation.
