The start of the new school year has been met with challenges for families in Saliadrau Village, Namosi, as children must brave the Wainikoroiluva River each day to reach school. Despite ongoing appeals to the government for the construction of a bridge to enhance safety during the crossing, no resolutions have been made.

Sereana Bose, a mother of three, highlighted the precarious situation, stating, “Our children’s school attendance often depends on the weather.” To manage the daily tribulation, children prepare by placing their uniforms in plastic bags, changing after they successfully cross. However, Ms. Bose noted that inclement weather can lead to missed school days due to the strong currents of the river.

Village elder Rusiate Mataika echoed these concerns, reminiscing about similar dangers he faced as a child. He expressed hope for governmental aid, emphasizing that the current method of crossing remains hazardous, with some children using tire tubes, which further elevates risk.

The community continues to advocate for a solution to this pressing issue, as ensuring safe access to education is paramount for the future of their children. Villagers maintain hope that their longstanding struggles will soon be acknowledged and addressed by authorities, prioritizing the safety and education of the youth in Saliadrau Village.

This situation reflects a broader issue often faced by rural communities throughout the region, underscoring the need for infrastructure improvements to support safer commuting options for students.
