Residents of Navunikabi Village in Namosi voiced their opposition to a proposed hydroelectric dam on Saturday during a peaceful protest. Almost 100 villagers, spanning all ages, gathered near the planned dam site, holding banners and placards with the message, “We say no to a hydro dam.”
The villagers expressed their concerns about the consultations surrounding the $200 million project, which aims to develop hydroelectric sites at Wainikoroiluva, Wainikovu, and Waivaka in both Namosi and Naitasiri provinces. While some community members support the initiative, many are worried about the potential flooding of their homes due to rising water levels.
Simione Mekemeke, a member of the Lomani Au Maroroi Au (LAMA) group, spoke on behalf of the villagers, stating, “Our forefathers are buried here, and we have built our lives in this village. Relocation is not an option for us.” He criticized the project’s communication, noting that initial studies occurred without proper consultation with the villagers.
The community has also raised concerns about the possible environmental impacts on local businesses, particularly the Namosi Eco Retreat, fearing that the dam could disturb the area’s natural beauty. LAMA chairman Sipiriano Nariva reiterated the collective stance against the hydro project, stating, “The bottom line of what we want is – no to hydro. We want to tell Government and everyone who is behind this proposed hydro to please leave us alone.”
Sabeta Seniqumu, a 72-year-old villager, stressed the importance of protecting the village’s culture and history, asserting that potential relocation undermines their heritage. Others echoed her sentiments, emphasizing their reliance on natural resources for their livelihoods and questioning the necessity of the dams given their current access to electricity.
Ratu Iowane Matanitobua, chair of the Namosi Provincial Council, confirmed that the project is still in the feasibility study phase, with no concrete plans yet finalized. Efforts to reach Tui Namosi Ratu Suliano Matanitobua and EFL CEO Hasmukh Patel for comments were unsuccessful.
