Villagers in Macuata Make Urgent Plea to Government

Residents of Daku village on Kia Island, Macuata, are urgently appealing to the Government for the construction of a seawall to protect their community.

This request is driven by the continuous threat of climate change impacting the villagers. Joana Finau, spokesperson for the Daku Emergency Development Committee, emphasized that coastal erosion is posing a severe risk to their homes and livelihoods. She stated that a properly built seawall could mitigate this erosion.

“Our land is being washed away by the sea. Climate change is a danger we face every day,” Ms. Finau explained.

Her husband, Apikuku Finau, added, “The lives of the 11 households are now at stake. The seawall can help keep the sea from reaching our homes.”

Ms. Finau mentioned that the development committee has prioritized this project, along with addressing a water crisis and the construction of an evacuation center. Currently in the United States, she continues to advocate for this cause.

“Every day, a bit of the coastline is washed away. We urgently need Government assistance,” she stressed. “There is a programme for seawall construction, and we are requesting to be included.”

Ms. Finau also suggested that the responsible ministry raise more awareness among coastal villages about the challenges posed by climate change.
