The Village Boys rugby team is entering the Wairiki 7s tournament with a determined mindset, aiming to build on their successful start in the Fiji Bitter series. With their recent victory of 15-12 against Kava Vacalea in Levuka, they are eager to secure another win in the competition commencing tomorrow.
Head coach Epeli Matata praises the team’s dedication and the thorough preparation they have undertaken in the lead-up to the tournament. “The boys have been preparing well for the past week, with a good start in Levuka. They are focused and ready for the task ahead,” he stated. The emphasis during their training sessions has been on honing their skills, particularly in set pieces and ball play, to enhance their on-field performance.
Recognizing the challenges ahead at Wairiki 7s, Matata acknowledges that all teams will be prepared and striving for success. The team is facing the hurdle of two injured players, yet they are committed to maintaining their momentum by sticking with the same lineup from the Yalovata 7s tournament. “We have two injured players, so they will be replaced, but we are going to feature the same team from the Yalovata 7s, so we are looking forward to the tournament,” Matata explained.
This tournament also presents an opportunity for younger players to gain invaluable experience alongside their more seasoned teammates. “We have a young side; it’s good to let these players get exposed and learn from the more experienced members and grow from them,” said Matata. The team is committed to a game-by-game approach, focusing on improving their performance throughout the series.
However, the Village Boys face financial challenges as they continue to lack a sponsor. This situation has resulted in players covering their own travel expenses and engaging in fundraising efforts for food costs. Despite these difficulties, the team’s passion for rugby shines through. Matata remarked, “It has been hard for us, but we keep pushing through as we know that these players love the sport and play from their heart.”
Matata expressed his gratitude to the team’s supporters, especially their families, who have been a constant source of encouragement. The Wairiki 7s tournament is set to run from tomorrow through Saturday, and the Village Boys are hopeful of achieving success in this competitive environment.
