The Village Boys rugby team is gearing up for an exciting challenge at the upcoming 2025 McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s, taking place from next Thursday to Saturday at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Selected as one of the 16 prominent youth teams in Fiji, they are committed to showcasing their skills in this prestigious tournament.
In preparation, the squad has been training diligently at the YMCA gym in Suva, with players returning gradually after the festive season. Vice-captain Tevita Driwa acknowledged the challenge of incomplete attendance but remains optimistic, saying, “The numbers here do not reflect the full squad that we have. Some more of our boys are expected to join us later on in the week as we continue with our preparation.”
Despite the smaller training group, the team’s dedication to achieving their goals remains unwavering. Driwa emphasized their ambition, stating, “Every team trains to win, and we are no different. We want to go out there, perform, and win.”
As they prepare for what could be a thrilling match against the reigning youth champions, Dominion Brothers, Driwa assured that they will not be daunted by their opponents’ reputation. “Our target is to win the youth division at the Coral Coast 7s. We just have to make full use of our strength, stick to our game plan, and that will take us close to winning,” he affirmed.
The Village Boys have noted recent successes, having won the youth division at the Fiji Bitter Nacula Yasawa 7s in Lautoka in December 2024, and reaching the semi-finals in the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s in Taveuni shortly afterward.
As the team continues its preparations, there’s a palpable sense of hope and ambition that could lead to a strong performance at the Coral Coast 7s. With determination and teamwork, the Village Boys may just capture new accolades in this celebrated event.
