Viliame Mata, the No. 8 for the Fiji national rugby team, has secured a new contract with the Bristol Bears, ensuring his commitment to the Gallagher Premiership club. The 34-year-old joined the Bears from Edinburgh two seasons ago and has since contributed significantly with 28 appearances under the guidance of director of rugby, Pat Lam.

Mata’s contract renewal follows recent extensions made by teammates Louis Rees-Zammit, Harry Randall, and fellow back-rower Fitz Harding, demonstrating a strong commitment to the team. Expressing his enthusiasm for remaining at Ashton Gate, Mata expressed gratitude for the support from coaches, teammates, and fans, and his desire to contribute to a special journey at the club.

Pat Lam praised Mata for embodying the qualities Bristol seeks in a player, highlighting his destructive and skillful ball-carrying ability. Lam noted that Mata’s power, work ethic, and selfless attitude are invaluable for establishing the team’s physical presence on the field.

The Bristol Bears are set to host the European champions Bordeaux-Begles at Ashton Gate this coming Sunday, with Mata’s continued presence likely to bolster their chances in this crucial matchup. This contract extension not only reinforces Mata’s dedication to the club but also marks a positive step for the Bears as they aim for success in the ongoing season.
