The Police M-PAiSA Task Force is intensifying its efforts to combat a concerning rise in scams targeting users of the M-PAiSA platform, particularly during the distribution of the Government’s $200 Back to School Assistance funds. Acting Commissioner of Police, Juki Fong Chew, has issued a strong warning to the public, urging them to remain vigilant during this critical financial period.

Commissioner Chew emphasizes that to protect their financial security, parents and guardians should not allow children or unaccompanied individuals to handle withdrawals. Scammers often lurk during busy times like this, seeking to exploit unsuspecting families. “You don’t know who is at the sidelines exploring the opportunity to steal information or money,” he cautioned.

He also highlighted the importance of safeguarding sensitive personal information, such as Personal Identification Numbers (PINs) and passwords. Scammers frequently use various communication platforms, including text messages, WhatsApp, Viber, and Facebook, to solicit money or personal information under false pretenses. The police are actively working to educate the community about common scams and encouraging discussions around safe financial practices.

Recovery from scams can be a complex and time-consuming process, often requiring significant involvement from law enforcement and other agencies. Therefore, it’s crucial for families to stay informed and cautious to minimize risks of financial exploitation.

These efforts are part of a broader initiative by the Fiji Police Force to raise awareness and empower families during this financially sensitive time. By collectively promoting responsibility and vigilance, communities can foster a supportive environment that diminishes the threat of scams.

In summary, the focus on vigilance and responsible financial behavior is vital as families navigate the back-to-school season. Through proactive measures and community cooperation, families can enjoy increased security, ensuring that they can thrive without the fear of being victimized by scams.
