Vigilance on the Roads: Police Warn Against Viber Group Alerts

Motorists have been warned against the creation of Viber groups aimed at sharing locations of police traffic checkpoints and speed radars. This practice is perceived as a tactic to dodge enforcement of road safety measures and has raised concerns among law enforcement officials.

Superintendent of Police Eroni Soqosoqo, the Acting Divisional Police Commander for the Northern region, stated that such groups severely impact police operations and pose significant dangers on the road. He explained that while drivers may slow down when approaching checkpoints due to these alerts, they often accelerate afterward, which can result in accidents.

SP Soqosoqo underscored the necessity of cooperation between the police and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to enhance road safety and eliminate reckless driving behaviors. He mentioned that the police are particularly watchful during this busy time of year as they continue their foot patrols and road operations to protect public safety.

In tandem, the LTA highlighted that driver fatigue is a major factor contributing to road accidents in Fiji. They cautioned that extended periods of driving without breaks can increase the likelihood of mishaps. In this regard, the LTA encourages motorists to take regular breaks and emphasizes the importance of passengers in promoting safety by speaking up if they notice signs of driver fatigue.

The call to “Stop, Revive, and Survive” is a crucial reminder for all road users. Both authorities strongly advise against any actions that could obstruct police and LTA efforts, pointing out that these behaviors significantly hinder road safety initiatives aimed at protecting everyone.

As we approach the New Year, the focus on ensuring safer roads is more important than ever, highlighting the role that every driver can play in maintaining a secure driving environment.

Summary: Police are cautioning motorists against forming Viber groups to report traffic checkpoints, as it compromises road safety and police operations. The LTA has also pointed out that driver fatigue is a key factor in accidents, urging drivers to take breaks and for passengers to assist in ensuring safety. As the New Year nears, authorities are emphasizing collaboration to foster a safer driving atmosphere for all.
