Veteran goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau, aged 42, has successfully secured a spot in Fiji’s 26-member squad for the upcoming matches in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, taking place in Papua New Guinea. Tamanisau, a Police Inspector, recently shone at the FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) in Lautoka, where he was awarded the Golden Glove after leading the Babasiga Lions to victory against Navua in a penalty shootout.
The native of Naisaumua in Tailevu will play a pivotal role in the Rob Sherman-coached team, which kicked off their qualifying campaign with a 1-0 win in Suva on October 10. Alongside Tamanisau, the squad features fellow goalkeepers Akuila Mateisuva from Suva and Jerome Narayan, who is based in Sydney.
Additionally, seasoned forward Christopher Wasasala has made a return to the national team. Other overseas players in the lineup include Wellington’s Gabriel Matanisiga, Mohammed Raheem, team captain Roy Krishna, Auckland’s Nabil Begg, Sydney United midfielder Leroy Jennings, and London-based defender Scott Wara. Youngsters Josh Laqeretabua and Nadi goalkeeper Joela Biuvanua have notable exclusions, along with Lautoka’s Aporosa Yada, Ba’s Etonia Dogalau, and Suva’s Kavaia Rawaqa. However, Mosese Nabose, Merrill Nand, and Antonio Tuivuna are back after missing the opening match.
The Bula Boys are all set to depart for Papua New Guinea on Sunday, where they will compete against the host nation on Thursday and face New Caledonia the following Sunday.
This exciting selection showcases the depth and talent present within Fiji’s football scene, particularly with a mixture of experienced players and emerging talents. The team’s readiness and Tamanisau’s leadership will be crucial as they aim for continued success on the qualifying journey.
