Veteran goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau has secured his position in Fiji’s 26-member squad for the remaining matches of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers taking place in Papua New Guinea. At 42 years old and serving as a Police Inspector, Tamanisau recently earned the Golden Glove award at the FMF Inter District Championship (IDC) held in Lautoka, where he played a crucial role in leading the Babasiga Lions to victory over Navua in a penalty shootout.
Hailing from Naisaumua in Tailevu, Tamanisau is expected to be a vital asset for the squad, which is coached by Rob Sherman. The team kicked off their qualifying campaign successfully with a 1-0 win against their first opponent in Suva on October 10.
Other goalkeepers in the squad include Akuila Mateisuva from Suva and Jerome Narayan, who is based in Sydney. The team has also welcomed back experienced Labasa striker Christopher Wasasala. The lineup features several overseas-based players such as captain Roy Krishna, who leads alongside newcomers from Wellington, Sydney, and Auckland. Notably absent from the squad this time are young talent Josh Laqeretabua and Nadi’s Joela Biuvanua, as well as Lautoka’s Aporosa Yada, Ba’s Etonia Dogalau, and Suva’s Kavaia Rawaqa. Meanwhile, Mosese Nabose, Merrill Nand, and Antonio Tuivuna have made their return after missing the initial match.
The Bula Boys are set to leave for Papua New Guinea on Sunday, with matches slated against PNG on Thursday and New Caledonia the following Sunday.
This development showcases the resilience and depth of Fiji’s national football team as they prepare for these crucial qualifiers. With a blend of experienced players and new talent, there’s a sense of hope that Fiji can continue to build on their initial success and make a strong showing in the World Cup qualifiers.
