In a vibrant gathering of tradition and cultural reverence, descendants of Buatavatava, the grandson of Lutunasobasoba, were celebrated in Ucunivanua Village, Verata, Tailevu. The event marked an emotional homecoming for the descendants, reconnecting them with their ancestral lands and rekindling long-standing familial ties. This ceremony, known as soqo ni cara sala, emphasized the storied history of Buatavatava, who had been exiled by his father, Ratu Rokomautu, for challenging traditional customs.

The history relayed by Ratu Isireli Vesikula set the tone for a day rich with tradition. Buatavatava’s resistance to ritual practices led to his departure, but not without a profound symbol of his journey—to plant a bua branch where he would establish his new home at Cakaunitabua. His descendants retraced this journey back to Verata, laden with gifts and traditional foods, symbolizing the full circle of their heritage.

The emotional significance of this renewal was underscored by the ceremonial actions of Turaga na Tui Bua Ramakutu Nagagavoka, a direct descendant. His offerings, including fine mats, the magiti, and the presentation of a tabua, bridged a historical gap, seeking forgiveness for past grievances, and solidifying the bond between Verata and Bua.

Parallel events in the region, such as the installations of chiefs in Lau and Tailevu, reflect a broader resurgence in traditional leadership and cultural ceremonies in Fiji. These gatherings not only honor individual family or community histories but also reinforce communal unity and cultural identity. Such events foster an environment of optimism, healing long-held divides and looking toward a unified and culturally enriched future.

The day’s ceremonies wrapped up with a display of traditional rituals and dances, recalling past journeys, and underscoring a shared heritage. The shared efforts of Ucunivanua Village and their guests highlighted the resilience and enduring strength of Fijian culture, serving as a hopeful beacon toward continued unity and tradition.
