Venom 3: Can the Antihero Break Box Office Records Again?

“Venom: The Last Dance” is set to invigorate the October box office this weekend, with projections for a domestic debut of $65 million and $100 million internationally. Despite this optimistic forecast, the threequel may record the lowest opening among Sony’s popular antihero films.

The original “Venom” premiered with $80.2 million in 2018, setting a record for October, but it was later surpassed by “Joker,” which debuted at $96.2 million. The second film, “Venom: Let There Be Carnage,” opened in October 2021 to $90 million, providing a significant boost for theaters recovering from the pandemic and marking a strong performance for Sony.

“Venom: The Last Dance” is expected to outshine previous October openings after “Joker: Folie à Deux” flopped with a $37 million debut, following a disappointing D CinemaScore for the sequel. Though threequels often experience a decline in box office performance, Sony remains optimistic that the loyal fanbase will embrace this installment, leading to better-than-anticipated ticket sales.

Reviews for “Venom 3” will be available at noon on Wednesday. The film is reported to have a budget of $120 million, excluding marketing expenses. On its opening day in select international markets, “Venom 3” earned an impressive $9.3 million in China, marking the largest opening day for a comic book film since Sony’s “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” This success has led Sony to revise its international box office forecast to $100 million, up from the previous estimate of $85 million.

Directed by Kelly Marcel, “Venom 3” features Tom Hardy reprising his role as the titular character. Hardy co-wrote the screenplay with Marcel, who is making her directorial debut with this film.

Alongside “Venom: The Last Dance,” the weekend will also see the release of “Conclave,” a critically acclaimed thriller by Edward Berger focused on the election of a new pope. Produced by FilmNation and Indian Paintbrush, the film boasts a star-studded cast, including Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, and Isabella Rossellini. Focus Features is releasing “Conclave” in 1,742 theaters and anticipates an opening weekend gross of $4 million to $6 million. The film, which cost just under $20 million to produce, is expected to perform well during the awards season, holding a 95 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
