Vendors on the Move: Suva’s Bean Cart Relocation Explained

Spread the love

Thirteen bean cart vendors near the Suva Bus Stand have been successfully relocated to the Suva Municipal Market to address safety concerns tied to impending road upgrades. Tevita Boseiwaqa, chair of the Suva City Council (SCC), emphasized that the relocation was necessary due to potential dangers posed by heavy machinery that will be operating in the area as part of the Fiji Roads Authority’s (FRA) redevelopment initiative.

Boseiwaqa highlighted the risks associated with allowing vendors to remain in the vicinity during construction, stating it could lead to safety and liability issues. He mentioned plans for a comprehensive redevelopment of the western bus stand, which may commence in the next fiscal year, but emphasized that the current focus is predominantly on upgrading the roads.

The SCC reassured that the affected vendors were actively consulted throughout the process. Notices were issued to inform them about the changes, and they worked collaboratively to identify appropriate alternative locations for their businesses. The council’s communication emphasized that these efforts were aimed at ensuring that the transition was seamless and adhered to Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards while enabling necessary infrastructure improvements.

Boseiwaqa reinforced that the process was handled inclusively and transparently, with a positive reception from the vendors regarding their new setup.

This relocation not only prioritizes the safety of the vendors and the public but also aligns with the city’s vision for enhanced infrastructure. As the upgrades progress, the city is poised for improved services and accessibility, ultimately benefiting both vendors and the community as a whole.

In summary, the successful relocation of the vendors is a proactive step by the Suva City Council to safeguard public safety while facilitating essential urban development.
