Thirteen bean cart vendors from the Suva Bus Stand have been relocated to the Suva Municipal Market to ensure safety amidst upcoming road construction projects. Tevita Boseiwaqa, chair of the Suva City Council (SCC), announced this decision, highlighting the risks associated with heavy machinery that will be present in the MPI car park due to the Fiji Roads Authority’s redevelopment initiatives.

Boseiwaqa stressed the importance of safety, stating, “It’s a big risk if we allow them to continue operating business in the area; we would be liable to safety and hazard breach.” He indicated that the primary objective of these changes is to accommodate road upgrades, which are planned for execution in the near future.

The council has confirmed it engaged with the vendors proactively by issuing notices and collaborating on identifying alternative locations for their operations. Their efforts aimed at guaranteeing the relocation is handled smoothly, fairly, and in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards, all while allowing essential infrastructure improvements.

Boseiwaqa asserted that the process has been inclusive and transparent, with positive feedback from the vendors regarding the relocation.

This initiative not only addresses immediate safety concerns but also lays the groundwork for future developments that could enhance the overall infrastructure of Suva. By working collaboratively with vendors, the council showcases a commitment to community welfare even amidst necessary changes. This also reflects a proactive approach to urban planning, ensuring that local businesses can adapt while maintaining safety for all.
