Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has reported notable advancements in the ongoing reconstruction of Vatuwaqa Primary School, which has faced various challenges since suffering a devastating fire over two years ago. Independent MP Hem Chand has emphasized the need for a comprehensive progress report, underscoring the prolonged inactivity since the incident.
Minister Radrodro expressed confidence in the ministry’s dialogues with the school’s trustee board, stating that they are actively working to resolve legal and logistical matters surrounding the reconstruction, including issues pertaining to lease agreements alleged to have been breached. He noted, “We’ve heard legal advice regarding the delay undertaken by the trustees… and this is something that I’ve already been alluded to that it is progressing well.”
The fire incident in December 2022 resulted in the complete destruction of one school block and significant damage to another, compelling the school to remain closed since then. The National Fire Authority classified the fire as suspected arson shortly after the incident, adding to the urgency for reconstruction efforts.
Building on the current status of Vatuwaqa Primary School’s reconstruction, Radrodro recalled the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing overall infrastructure for educational institutions. Other schools, like Lelean Memorial School and Vanuakula Catholic School, have also been undergoing rehabilitation due to similar fire incidents. The Minister highlighted that the restoration of Degei House at Ratu Kadavulevu School is nearing completion, with plans to celebrate its reopening during the school’s centenary events.
This proactive approach by the government, particularly through the establishment of a dedicated Rehabilitation Unit within its Asset and Infrastructure Section, aims to tackle the infrastructural challenges that have arisen. This unit is expected to begin addressing the assessments of affected schools promptly, instilling hope that a safer and more conducive learning environment can be restored for all students.
The collaborative efforts by the Ministry to prioritize educational infrastructure reflect a commitment to overcoming past challenges and ensuring that students will soon return to safe and well-equipped learning environments.
