Vatulele, an island situated off the Coral Coast of Fiji’s main island, Viti Levu, is renowned for its unique red prawns and its vibrant iTaukei masi designs. Recently, it served as the venue for the Mick’s Fiji Tours & Transfers Vatulele 7s—a two-day rugby tournament held from December 19 to 20 at the Vatulele District School located in the village of Ekubu, the traditional seat of Taukei na Vunisa Levu, Ratu Joji Toge.

Now in its third year at a singular location instead of rotating among various sites, the Vatulele 7s provided an opportunity for locals to enjoy excellent rugby over the two days. The tournament was conceptualized by Ekubu villagers Vilive Qionikorolevu and Asesela Naborisi, who aimed to give back to their community by raising funds to construct a new walkway for the district school.

The event marked a journey of adventure for many. Accessing the island was solely achieved by fiberglass boats from Korolevu landing, leading to a tumultuous ride due to strong winds. On arrival, the warmhearted welcome from the local community showcased the renowned Fijian hospitality.

The tournament got underway on a sunny Thursday with some teams unable to compete for various reasons. This situation allowed other teams to advance to elimination matches sooner than expected. The intensity heightened as teams battled during the knockout stages, demonstrating their athleticism and resolve.

On the final day, the excitement peaked with thrilling matches. The TEMC Warriors emerged victorious, defeating the Gold Coast Senibiau with a resounding 34-5 score, thanks to their disciplined gameplay. The Naboutini team and Hydro Bukuya also celebrated victories in their respective categories, with Naboutini winning the shield trophy and Hydro Bukuya capturing the bowl trophy.

As the tournament concluded, Qionikorolevu expressed gratitude to the sponsors for their continued support, while audience members eagerly looked forward to next year’s tournament.

The experience left a profound impact on the visitors, highlighting the contrast between urban convenience and the tranquil, community-oriented life on Vatulele. The warm hospitality shown by local families cultivated relationships that underscored the importance of community bonds.

As the Fiji Times team departed, they reflected on the beauty of the island and the connections formed during their stay, returning with cherished memories and a yearning for the simplicity and unity found in such experiences. The hope is that the upcoming tournament in August fosters even stronger ties and continues to uplift the local community.

In summary, the Vatulele 7s not only provided a platform for competitive rugby but also strengthened community relationships and showcased the island’s charm and hospitality, leaving participants and spectators eagerly anticipating next year’s event.
