The Ministry of Health and the Vatukoula Gold Mine are addressing a serious incident involving employee Amitesh Ram, who sustained injuries while working underground and has since become bedridden. Following his accident on November 13, Ram was treated for a leg injury at both Tavua and Lautoka hospitals. However, after surgery at Lautoka, he experienced severe complications that led to a coma. Currently, Ram is in a serious condition, unable to speak, hear, or see, and is reliant on a feeding tube and catheter.

Ram’s family has raised concerns regarding possible medical negligence linked to his surgical treatment, noting that he exhibited normal functions prior to the procedure. They are questioning how a leg injury could result in such a dire outcome, suggesting potential surgical errors or medical oversight. The family’s frustration is compounded by what they perceive as a lack of clear communication from the medical staff at Lautoka Hospital despite their repeated requests for information.

In response to these allegations, Jyotika Chand, Executive Assistant at the Ministry of Health, stated that the case is being taken seriously, with an internal review of the clinical records underway. The Ministry has indicated that while they cannot disclose specific details due to patient confidentiality, they are committed to transparency in the review process.

The Vatukoula Gold Mine has also provided a statement regarding the incident, emphasizing that Ram received immediate care at Tavua Hospital before being transferred to Lautoka for surgery. The company noted that Ram’s condition worsened due to complications unrelated to the original workplace injury. They have initiated an internal investigation and are committed to supporting Ram’s family through this challenging time, reinforcing that employee safety is of utmost importance.

As investigations continue, there is a collective hope that clarity will soon emerge regarding these troubling circumstances, ensuring that both Ram’s family and the workplace community receive the answers and support they deserve.
