The Vatukoro under-19 rugby team is gearing up for a crucial quarter-finals match today, with the team manager Veretariki Vurewa emphasizing the need for an improved game plan to secure a spot in the semi-finals. Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Vurewa expressed gratitude for the team’s performance on the tournament’s opening day and acknowledged the support from sponsors, particularly Aswin Chandra of Supercool California in America.
The players are driven by their aspiration to represent the national team, inspired by a fellow teammate, Marika Driudriu, who has been selected for next year’s U20 Junior Flying Fijians squad. Vurewa indicated that several players from this youth group may rise to the ranks of the national sevens or Flying Fijians teams in the future.
Most of the players hail from Nausori Village in Ra and have worked diligently as farmers to finance their participation in the tournament. Their ultimate goal is to reach the finals and claim victory in the Under-19 category. Vurewa also highlighted the valuable contributions of their coach Ilai Nameke and expressed appreciation for the continuous support from fans and team members.
He concluded by requesting prayers from their supporters as they prepare for a challenging match against QVSOB today.
This tournament not only showcases the team’s talent but also highlights the resilience and dedication of young athletes striving for their dreams amidst challenging circumstances. As the team goes into their match, the community rallying behind them symbolizes a collective hope for their success, reinforcing that their hard work may lead to greater opportunities in the world of rugby.
