The Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s president, Lawrence Kumar, has expressed optimism about the recent reduction of Value Added Tax (VAT) from 15% to 12.5%, effective August 1, 2025. He believes this change will not only benefit businesses but also empower average consumers, allowing them to stretch their purchasing power further. Kumar emphasized that this fiscal relief will help families save money, ultimately enabling them to buy more essential goods.

In relation to the broader economic context, Kumar noted that the current National Budget, which has been described as a deficit budget, requires innovative strategies to mitigate financial challenges. He stated that businesses in Nadi have responded positively to this budget, underscoring the need for effective implementation of its measures to ensure the savings from the VAT reduction are passed on to consumers.

Supporting this sentiment, previous discussions highlighted the budget’s intent to alleviate financial pressure on Fijians. The budget is expected to return approximately $250 million to consumers, alongside other relief measures such as subsidies on transportation and essential goods. The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) is tasked with monitoring price adjustments to ensure compliance from businesses, aiming to prevent price exploitation during this transition.

The announcement has been generally welcomed across various sectors, with calls for collective efforts to enhance the living standards of all Fijians. Comments from sector leaders point toward a shared optimism that these economic measures will pave the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future, fostering growth amidst external pressures.

Overall, the focus on community support and the proactive measures introduced in this budget indicate a commitment to addressing the urgent needs of families amid rising costs of living, signaling a potential uplift in the quality of life for many citizens.
