Vanuatu’s authorities have taken a significant step forward by reopening parts of the central business district (CBD) in Port Vila more than two months after it was devastated by a powerful magnitude-7.3 earthquake on December 17, 2023. This tragic event led to the loss of 14 lives, including two children, and caused widespread destruction, severely impacting local businesses and residents alike.
The earthquake resulted in significant structural damage, with many buildings, including the main market, slated for demolition. According to Andrew Napuat, Vanuatu’s Minister for Internal Affairs, crucial work remains to be done on roads, drainage, and sewage systems before a complete reopening of the CBD can occur.
Alongside the reopening news, a report from the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the Department of Labour highlights the ongoing struggle local businesses face in maintaining employment levels. Nearly half of the surveyed businesses reported they could sustain their workforce for only one to two more months. So far, approximately 900 employees have been laid off due to the earthquake’s devastating impact, primarily in the food and beverage sector, where employment has dropped by 71 percent.
Despite these challenges, the community’s resilience shines through. No businesses have permanently closed, reflecting a determination to recover. VCCI plans to collaborate closely with government partners and regional organizations to expedite support and recovery efforts.
Furthermore, the earthquake’s toll extends deeply into the education sector, with an estimated $8 million needed to rebuild around 45 damaged schools, drawing significant attention to the plight of about 700 displaced children. Initiatives have been launched, including the establishment of five child-friendly spaces that offer emotional support to over 550 affected children, showcasing the community’s strength in these trying times.
While recovery efforts will take time, there is a palpable hope among residents as local authorities and international organizations work together to support revitalization efforts in Port Vila. The spirit of solidarity displayed by the community serves as a testament to their determination to overcome adversity.
In summary, as Vanuatu begins to emerge from the recent tragedy, it reflects a collective effort toward recovery fostering optimism for a brighter future in Port Vila.
