The Government of Vanuatu is expressing its commitment to rebuilding Air Vanuatu in light of the airline’s recent financial struggles. Following its financial collapse, the government is taking steps to revitalize the airline by restructuring its management and operations from the ground up. An official spokesperson has indicated that updates regarding the airline’s recovery strategy will be forthcoming.

The government is currently seeking candidates for the board of directors of both Air Vanuatu and Airports Vanuatu Limited (AVL). The new board will play a key role in overseeing the restructuring and future management of the airline. Questions linger concerning the position of acting CEO Joseph Laloyer, who has had a significant influence on the airline and has advocated for decisive action regarding its future.

Earlier this year, Laloyer pushed for the government to make a decision that would either involve a significant reinvestment to stabilize Air Vanuatu or proceed with placing it in receivership, which could allow for a restructuring process similar to Chapter 11 in the United States. While there is no confirmation about the creation of a new national carrier, informally referred to as “AV3,” the government’s plans indicate a significant shift in how Air Vanuatu will be managed moving forward.

This situation unfolds against the backdrop of securing funding for the airline’s future. The government has previously assured that the USD 20 million allocated for expanding Air Vanuatu’s fleet, specifically for new Airbus A220 aircraft, remains intact as they navigate domestic aviation service challenges. As these developments hint at a renewed focus on efficient air travel in the region, there is cautious optimism about the recovery of the airline and, subsequently, Vanuatu’s tourism and economy.

The introduction of a capable board and clear strategy could potentially mark a turning point for Air Vanuatu, fostering trust in its operations and paving the way for sustainable growth and enhanced connectivity within the region.
