As internet services in Vanuatu are gradually coming back online, many Fijians took to social media to reassure friends and family of their safety following a devastating earthquake. Reports from Radio New Zealand indicated that the death toll has unfortunately risen to 14, with approximately 200 individuals receiving treatment for injuries. Among those who shared updates was Ana Tudrau-Tamani, a Fijian citizen and communications officer for the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat. In a heartfelt Facebook post, she confirmed the safety of her colleagues and their families while expressing gratitude for the support and prayers from loved ones.

Despite the personal reassurances, Mrs. Tamani highlighted the challenging conditions on the ground, with essential services including water, power, and internet heavily affected. Many victims are still trapped under rubble and landslides, necessitating immediate search and rescue operations.

In response to the ongoing crisis, Thomas Bruce, the chief executive officer of Vanuatu’s Vodafone, has called for cooperation among service providers to expedite the restoration of communication services. The earthquake led to significant damage at the landing station of the submarine cable connection in Mele.
