Jotham Napat has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Vanuatu, assuming the position unopposed on Tuesday. The former Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, head of the Reunification Movement for Change, put Napat forward for nomination. Ishmael Kalsakau, a former Prime Minister and current MP for Port Vila, confirmed that there were no other candidates and extended his congratulations to Napat.
In addition to Napat’s election, former judge Stephen Felix has assumed the role of Speaker of Parliament after also being elected unopposed. In his initial address, Felix expressed gratitude to his colleagues and emphasized the importance of prioritizing the nation’s interest in their legislative actions.
The Parliament also welcomed four deputy speakers in unchallenged elections:
– John William Timakata (Vanua’aku Party, Shepherds Constituency) – First Deputy Speaker
– Macrellino Barthelemy (Malekula) – Second Deputy Speaker
– Paul Paolo (Graon Mo Jastis Pati, Malekula) – Third Deputy Speaker
– Camillo Ati (Iauko Group, Santo Rural) – Fourth Deputy Speaker
The newly formed coalition government includes the Leaders Party, Vanua’aku Party, Graon Mo Jastis Party, Reunification Movement for Change, and the Iauko Group. This collaboration points towards a stable governance structure in Vanuatu.
The cooperative atmosphere in the recent elections bodes well for the country’s political landscape. The seamless transition of power and support among members illustrates a commitment to unity and progress, which is promising for Vanuatu’s future. The commitment to serving the best interests of the nation, highlighted by both Napat and Felix, fosters hope for effective leadership and constructive governance moving forward.
