The Government of Vanuatu, via the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Utilities (MIPU) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Vanuatu (CAAV), has approved a Foreign Air Operator Certificate (FAOC) for Australia’s Alliance Airlines. This decision expands air travel options in Vanuatu, complementing the services already provided by Qantas and Jetstar, following the liquidation of Air Vanuatu last year.

Wilfred Makaba, the Acting Director of CAAV, announced that operations for Alliance Airlines are set to commence on the 30th of this month, with the first flight expected to arrive in Vanuatu at 2:10 PM. Alliance Airlines will utilize smaller Embraer aircraft to serve routes where larger planes are not necessary, effectively functioning as a substitute for Qantas on certain routes.

The FAOC issued to Alliance Airlines is valid for 12 months, mirroring the certificates awarded to Qantas and Jetstar. The partnership between Qantas and Alliance Airlines has been significant since Qantas acquired a 19.9 percent stake in Alliance Aviation Services in February 2019, enhancing their operational capabilities. Although a planned full acquisition was halted by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), both airlines will maintain their cooperative functions to improve passenger services.

Alliance Airlines is known for providing efficient charter services, especially to the resource industry, and has gained a reputation for reliability in transporting workers to remote locations. The airline also caters to tailored travel needs, including sports teams and corporate events, while adhering to safety and regulatory standards.

The entry of Alliance Airlines into Vanuatu’s aviation sector is anticipated to boost tourism and enhance connectivity in the region, illustrating a collaborative effort to further develop air travel options.

Furthermore, aligning with the ongoing efforts to stabilize Vanuatu’s tourism and transportation sectors, this partnership brings hope for a vibrant future despite previous challenges. The addition of Alliance Airlines is a step towards strengthening Vanuatu’s ties with international air travel and fostering economic growth.
