Vanuatu began its campaign for the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers with an impressive 4-1 victory over Samoa at VFF Freshwater Stadium in Port Vila. Under the leadership of coach Juliano Schmeling, Vanuatu wasted no time in asserting dominance, scoring just seven minutes into the match through experienced striker Alex Saniel.
Captain Brian Kaltak played a key role in extending the lead, assisting speedy John Alick to make it 2-0 in the 37th minute, sending the teams into halftime with Vanuatu comfortably in front.
Samoa managed to score in the 55th minute, as substitute striker Nathan Viliamu capitalized on a counterattack initiated by Dauntae Mariner. Viliamu outpaced the defense and found the net, putting the scoreboard at 2-1. However, Vanuatu quickly responded, with Alick netting their third goal just two minutes later.
The team’s attacking momentum continued, leading to Bong Kalo sealing the game with a stunning strike from outside the box during injury time. Both teams will next compete in the November FIFA international window, facing New Zealand and Tahiti in Group B matches in Hamilton and Auckland.
