A second earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 has struck Vanuatu this morning, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geoscience. Due to disruptions in communication, the official death toll remains uncertain. However, preliminary reports indicate that at least 14 people have lost their lives, and around 200 individuals are receiving treatment for injuries, according to Katie Greenwood, the regional head of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies based in Fiji.
In response to this disaster, Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed the country’s readiness to provide assistance to Vanuatu in any way possible. He has also called on Fijians living in Vanuatu to reach out to local authorities for support and guidance during this critical time.
This event highlights the importance of regional solidarity in times of crisis and underscores the global community’s willingness to support affected nations. Though the circumstances are tragic, there is hope in the collaborative efforts of neighboring countries to help Vanuatu rebuild and recover.
