Lester Lowane, a 24-year-old university student from Vanuatu, shared his harrowing experience of narrowly escaping death during the recent 7.3 magnitude earthquake. Last week, while shopping for Christmas gifts with his mother, they found themselves in the Billabong store when the earthquake struck with alarming intensity.
Recalling the moment, Lowane said the shaking started strong within just a couple of seconds. Initially hoping the tremor would subside, he soon realized they needed to evacuate the store. However, their escape was impeded when the first exit they tried was locked, forcing them to find an alternate route. Unfortunately, before they could reach safety, the building collapsed.
Lowane described the panic as they fell to the ground, only to have a heavy concrete beam crash just centimeters away from him. He lost consciousness amidst the chaos and was later aware of blood around him, indicating the extent of the injuries sustained. While he suffered a fractured jaw, his mother remained unconscious but unharmed, trapped beneath debris.
As he gained consciousness, he discovered a small space around him that allowed for limited movement. After attempts to call for help went unheard due to the surrounding noise, he successfully contacted a cousin nearby, informing him of their dire situation and requesting assistance.
Rescue teams ultimately took 24 hours to extricate Lowane and others trapped in rubble, as they had to cut through the concrete. Fortunately, his mother and fellow survivors emerged with minor injuries, their lives spared by sheer luck and determination.
In the aftermath of the quake, Lowane expressed gratitude for his family’s safety and the support they received. Though he experienced ongoing anxiety from aftershocks, he is focusing on recovery, both physically and mentally. He remains optimistic about his future, with plans to pursue a degree in Aviation Management on an Australian scholarship.
The earthquake’s aftermath has left a significant impact on the community, with 14 reported deaths and over 2,000 residents displaced. While the emergency response continues, substantial progress has been made, with restoration efforts underway for basic services such as water and power.
Lowane took a moment to extend his heartfelt thanks to all those involved in the rescue effort, highlighting the solidarity and support from various organizations, including the Vanuatu Mobile Force and international partners.
As Vanuatu continues to rebuild, the resilience shown by its people and the recovery efforts ongoing offer a glimmer of hope for a brighter future amidst the challenges faced.
This story serves as a reminder of the strength of the human spirit in the face of natural disasters and the importance of community support during trying times.
