As Vanuatu works to restore its internet services, many Fijians have taken to social media to confirm their safety following a significant earthquake. The 7.3 magnitude earthquake that hit on Tuesday caused damage to the Vodafone network, hampering communication efforts with the outside world.
According to a report from Radio New Zealand, the death toll has risen to 14, with around 200 individuals receiving medical treatment for various injuries. Fijian citizen Ana Tudrau-Tamani reached out on Facebook last night to assure her loved ones that she and her colleagues at the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat are safe. In her message, she expressed gratitude to those who reached out and extended prayers and well wishes.
However, Mrs. Tamani did not shy away from the harsh reality faced on the ground, where access to water, power, and communication is severely compromised. She highlighted that victims remain trapped under debris and landslides, waiting for search and rescue operations.
In light of the widespread communication disruptions caused by the earthquake, Thomas Bruce, CEO of Vodafone Vanuatu, urged other service providers to seek alternative solutions to restore connectivity. He noted that the seismic activity had damaged the submarine cable at the Mele landing station, resulting in extensive network outages.
Leader of the Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, has called for support from the Pacific region to aid Vanuatu as it deals with the aftermath of this natural disaster. He expressed his condolences for the loss and destruction reported and committed to helping in every possible way.
Echoing this sentiment, Public Service Commission chairperson Luke Rokovada thanked emergency responders, volunteers, and all those working on the frontline. He emphasized the strong friendship between Fiji and Vanuatu and expressed confidence in the resilience of the people of Vanuatu to overcome this calamity. He recognized that the dedication of public servants will be crucial in rebuilding communities.
This moment of tragedy has also highlighted the interconnectedness and compassion shared among Pacific nations, showcasing a collective commitment to support one another in times of need.
In summary, as Vanuatu faces significant challenges following the recent earthquake, expressions of safety and solidarity are emerging from neighboring Fiji, reinforcing the strong bonds between these nations. With ongoing support and a community-focused response, there is hope for recovery and resilience.
