Vanuatu Dominates Samoa in World Cup Qualifier Opener

Vanuatu officially launched its 2026 World Cup Qualifiers campaign at VFF Freshwater Stadium in Port Vila, achieving a decisive 4-1 victory over Samoa.

Under the guidance of coach Juliano Schmeling, Vanuatu began the match aggressively, taking just seven minutes to score through experienced striker Alex Saniel. Captain Brian Kaltak then assisted speedy John Alick, who doubled Vanuatu’s advantage in the 37th minute, sending the team into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

Samoa managed to reduce the deficit in the 55th minute when substitute striker Nathan Viliamu, set up by Dauntae Mariner, outpaced the defense and found the net past the advancing goalkeeper. However, Vanuatu quickly regained control as Alick scored again just two minutes later.

Continuing their offensive efforts, Vanuatu created multiple scoring opportunities before Bong Kalo delivered a stunning strike from outside the box, securing the victory during injury time.

Both teams will return to action in the upcoming November FIFA international window, facing off in Group B games in Hamilton and Auckland against New Zealand and Tahiti.
