A State of Emergency has been formally instituted by Vanuatu’s President, His Excellency Moli Nikenike Vurobaravu Moliunavanua. This decision follows the significant damage caused by an earthquake that struck on December 17, 2024, particularly affecting several regions of Vanuatu.
According to President Moliunavanua, this declaration aims to facilitate response efforts in the areas hit the hardest. The action is taken in accordance with the presidential powers granted by subsection 32 (1) of the Disaster Risk Management Act No. 23 of 2019. The State of Emergency is set to last for seven days from the date of the declaration.
In such challenging times, this swift governmental response highlights the importance of preparedness and resilience in the face of natural disasters. The situation remains critical, but the proactive measures taken by Vanuatu’s leadership could help mitigate further challenges and coordinate relief efforts effectively.
This declaration is a reminder of the resilience of communities during times of disaster and the pivotal role that leadership plays in ensuring safety and recovery.
