A State of Emergency has been officially declared by the President of Vanuatu, His Excellency Moli Nikenike Vurobaravu Moliunavanua, in response to the severe aftermath of an earthquake that struck the region on December 17, 2024. This declaration applies to the areas that were most significantly affected by the disaster.
President Moliunavanua invoked his authority under subsection 32 (1) of the Disaster Risk Management Act No. 23 of 2019 to initiate this emergency measure. The declaration is set to remain in effect for a duration of seven days from the date it was issued.
This decisive action reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the needs of communities impacted by the earthquake and underscores the importance of rapid response during challenging times. Local authorities and agencies are expected to mobilize resources and assistance to aid recovery efforts as the situation unfolds.
While the declaration of a State of Emergency is a serious matter, it also provides an opportunity for solidarity and support among the affected communities, fostering resilience as they begin the recovery process.
