The Vanuabalavu team delivered an impressive performance as they clinched a thrilling 22-16 victory over Covenant Red in a gripping match during round nine of the FMF Suva Rugby Union Koroturaga competition yesterday.
The match took place at the Suva Grammar grounds, where both teams showcased solid defensive capabilities in the first half, leading to a tight score of 10-8 in favor of Vanuabalavu.
In the second half, Covenant Red executed a strategic move with a penalty kick from Lock Pio Nasau, briefly taking the lead at 11-10.
However, Vanuabalavu quickly bounced back with two outstanding tries, widening their lead to 22-11. Although Covenant Red made a late effort to stage a comeback with a try of their own, it fell short as Vanuabalavu sealed their victory with a final score of 22-16.
Vanuabalavu head coach Niumaia Serevi praised both teams for their performance, specifically commending Covenant Red. “It was really a great game, Covenant really gave us a great game,” Serevi remarked.
He noted the intensity of the first half, which was tightly contested, and emphasized the need for ball retention and strong defense in the second half. “Our set-pieces were lacking, and that is something we need to work on for our next match.”
Serevi also expressed gratitude to the team’s supporters, parents, and fans, dedicating the victory to everyone who has been part of Vanuabalavu’s journey.
