The Vanuabalavu team delivered an impressive performance, clinching a thrilling 22-16 victory over Covenant Red in a closely contested match during round nine of the FMF Suva Rugby Union Koroturaga competition yesterday.
The game, which took place at Suva Grammar grounds, showcased strong defensive plays from both teams in the first half, leading to a narrow score of 10-8 in favor of Vanuabalavu.
In the second half, Covenant Red gained a temporary advantage with Lock Pio Nasau’s penalty kick, bringing the score to 11-10. However, Vanuabalavu responded with two remarkable tries, widening their lead to 22-11.
Despite a late effort from Covenant Red to close the gap with a try, it wasn’t enough, as Vanuabalavu secured the win with a final score of 22-16.
Vanuabalavu’s head coach, Niumaia Serevi, praised both teams for their performance, highlighting the challenge posed by Covenant Red. “It was really a great game, Covenant really gave us a great game,” Serevi stated. He added that the first half was intense and emphasized the importance of ball retention and defense in the second half.
