The Lomaloma Jetty on Vanuabalavu Island has officially reopened, marking a significant development for the island community. The jetty had been closed since 2021 due to damage from seawater, and its revitalization is set to improve the local economy by facilitating the movement of goods and services, while enhancing connectivity for the residents.
With over 780 residents depending on the jetty for vital access to transportation for both passengers and cargo, its reopening promises reliable maritime services. These include monthly franchise vessels, private trips, and government shipping, which will greatly improve logistical operations in the area.
Lau Provincial Administrator Iokobo Waqanidrola highlighted the urgent need for infrastructure improvement in Vanuabalavu and expressed gratitude for the jetty’s reopening. He emphasized its potential to bridge the gap between urban and island communities, while also boosting tourism through an enhanced port of entry, assisting in creating more opportunities for economic growth.
This development aligns with recent infrastructure boosts observed across Fiji, including the opening of new jetties in places like Rotuma, which also aims to improve connectivity and accessibility for various islands. As Fiji continues to enhance its transport links, it is a hopeful sign of progress that holds the promise of revitalizing local economies and communities throughout the region.
